Devotionals Daily: A Year with Jesus

Strength Conditioning

Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord.”

—Jeremiah 17:5

In the twenty-first century, there appears to be only one standard for a good golfer anymore: power. With the younger players making themselves bigger and stronger, even on our local courses we talk most of all about how far a player hits it.

It is a curse of our time that we so quickly assess others by surface traits. We actually trust a person’s outward appearance to give us a reliable first impression of his or her overall character. And by elevating the value of people’s bodies in our evaluation of them, we raise the bar in our own lives, placing pressure on ourselves to build ourselves a certain way.

T rue strength, godly strength, comes from the heart of a person. With a pure heart we can make right choices. With a heart that is charged by God, we can do things that even our bodies might suggest we cannot do.
