Devotionals Daily: A Year with Jesus

From One Year Devotional Prayer Book II by Johnny Hunt

Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation! Our

God is the God of salvation; and to GOD the Lord belong escapes from death.

Psalm 68:19, 20

God has promised that His children will have happiness in spite of heaviness. When the psalmist speaks of how God “loads us with benefits,” he is referring to God bearing our burdens. Many translations read “who daily bears our burdens.”

The daily burdens of family issues, financial concerns, physical problems, and spiritual warfare can weigh us down and cause us to become discouraged. Our Lord has commanded us, “Cast your burden on the LORD, and He shall sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22).

The greatest burden we have ever had was the enormity of our sin—the guilt and consequences it brings, and our inability to take it away. But when we received salvation, our sins were covered by Christ’s death on the Cross. Peter states that Jesus “bore our sins in His own body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24).

God has also promised hope in spite of horror. Death is a horrible enemy. When Jesus Christ bore the burden of our sin over two thousand years ago, He conquered that enemy. By His resurrection from the grave, He made it possible for us to be freed from the burden of death. In his hymn “Leave It There,” Charles A. Tindley, a former slave, wrote, “When your youthful days are gone and old age is stealing on, and your body bends beneath the weight of care; He will never leave you then. He’ll go with you to the end. Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.”
