Devotionals Daily: A Year with Jesus

From Good Morning, Lord by Sheila Walsh

Today help me to read your Word from a different perspective: I want to see your love on every page.

The New Testament is full of stories of people whose lives were radically transformed by the love of God—Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jesus, the woman tormented by demons, a woman caught in adultery, one of the thieves crucified on Golgotha next to Jesus, to name a few. Seeing that pattern has prompted me to read the Bible with new eyes these days: no matter who the main players seem to be in a given scene, the story is about the love of God. It’s not about us—about how good or bad we think we have been. It’s all about our Father God and his beautiful Son, Jesus. And their love. Case in point.

Hear how Jesus himself once described his life’s mission: “The Son of Man came to find and restore the lost” (Luke 19:10 MSG). Jesus didn’t come to argue with religious leaders, heal those who were sick, or even paint a more accurate picture of his Father. Jesus came primarily to find and restore every lost human being, a work he ultimately did on the cross. And isn’t it interesting that the lost can be translated as “broken beyond repair”? Have you ever felt broken to that degree, despairing, afraid you weren’t going to make it? I love Luke 19:10 because it says that if we feel that way, we can take heart because that’s why Jesus came. And that’s love.
