SECRETS OF FISHERMEN

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” –Matthew 4:19 NIV

Jesus promised His disciples, “I will make you fishers of men.” What a wonderful description of their calling. He equated their previous profession with their new role. They would be able to use their knowledge to become experts in this new calling. What does fishing have to do with leading people to Christ?

Consider these skills of good fishermen:

First, they’ve got the right equipment. In fishing for men, we have the Bible.

Second, they go where the fish are. So many Christians live in “holy huddles.” All those Bible studies, all that learning how to share your faith, and yet so little time building relationships with nonbelievers.

Third, they know when to use the right bait. Fish respond differently to different bait, just as people have different interests and needs. You must learn what those needs are and seek to help meet them.

Fourth, they know how to reel them in. In business, we call this “closing the deal.” At some point in your witnessing, you need to call for the decision. The most exciting point in your witness is when that person decides whether or not to follow Jesus. It’s a key in becoming a “fisher of men”!
