BE THE CHANGE
It’s not enough to talk about making a difference. It’s time to get out there and actually do it. What can you do to make your corner of the world a better place? The great thing about the life of a single woman is we have a little more free time on our hands to get out there and volunteer, contribute, pay it forward, and make a difference because we don’t have as many demands on our time as married women do. And is there any better investment in your own life than to make someone else’s life a little better?
Remember: if you change your world, you change the world. If you ever doubted that one person has the power to change the world, just ask Rosa Parks. Or Anne Frank. Or Joan of Arc. Every person can do something. Start a committee. Sign a petition. Lend a hand. Give a hug. Love. The great equalizer is love.
We don’t all have the same gifts and talents to share with the world, but we can all love! Look around you. There are infinite opportunities to love and be loved. To give love, to speak love, to be love. You are robbing yourself of so many opportunities for joy in life if you convince yourself that the only way to know love is through a romantic relationship. You can change the world if you change your world, and you can start this very minute by shining your light as brightly as you can in your little corner of the earth. Change starts with you. When you step up, you invite others to step up too.
Little Changes That Make a Big Difference
- Sign up to be a Big Sister.
- Volunteer at your local domestic violence shelter or homeless shelter.
- Consider going on a mission trip.
- Become a child advocate for children in the foster care system.
- Make a pact with yourself to commit at least one random act of kindness a week.
Several years ago when I was between jobs, the person in the car in front of me at the drive-through paid for my coffee and muffin. It was such a small gesture, but it had such a big impact on me. I was extremely short on cash because I was out of a job, and a stranger’s kindness allowed me to save a few dollars toward my bills that I would have spent on coffee. It literally brought tears to my eyes. Now I make sure I do the same thing for the person in the drive-through line behind me at least once every few months. See how that one random act of kindness by a stranger all those years ago has been carried on and paid forward through me to others? No, it’s not an earth-shattering act, and it’s not achieving world peace or solving world hunger, but if it brings some cheer into the life of someone who may be in desperate need of a smile, isn’t that enough?
Nothing is more beautiful than someone who goes out of her way to make life beautiful for others. You can make a difference. When you don’t see the change, be the change instead.
