Why is it that when people asks us to say nice things about our friends we can rattle of a whole list, but when we are asked to say something nice about ourselves we freeze? Well the folks at Soul Pancake decided they were going to ask people to do exactly that, say something nice about themselves. So they took a group of people, stood them in front of a camera and asked ‘What is your best feature?'
Some people knew right off the bat and some took a little time feeling a little awkward before they answered. The coolest thing about this experiment was that they asked kids as young as 7 and adults all the way up to 88, and hearing their different answers are incredible. It is so striking how the younger children didn't hesitate at all to answer the question.
The 7-year-old quickly answered with "mostly everything." What a beautiful perspective that is. She knows that she is valuable and that overall she is a good person. It is sad how through the middle of our lives we tend to hesitate and wonder what is actually good about us. But by the time we've had time to live life and survive some tough things it becomes easier to know, accept and own the best parts about us.
It can be so easy to criticize yourself and break yourself down slowly and then one day you realize that you don't know if there is anything good about you at all. But God created us all with unique gifts and talents and it honors Him to take time to figure out what those talents are and how we should use them. So what would you say? What has God given you that makes you a light? What is your best feature?
