Devotionals Daily: A Year with Jesus

From Good Morning, Lord by Sheila Walsh

Today I will take my wounds to Calvary.

One evening a couple years ago I had the privilege of visiting a women's prison and spending the evening with some of the inmates-and what a rich time of worship we shared! Afterward, the assistant warden was kind enough to let me spend some one-on-one time with many of the women. One precious soul had written her story in a letter, and it was a heartbreaking tale of sexual and physical abuse much worse than anything I had ever heard described before. What impacted me was what she shared at the end: "God took me to a prison to set me free."

Some of the people who wounded her are gone from this earth; others refuse to acknowledge their guilt. But she is no longer a slave to any of them. She took her wounds to Calvary, and just as Christ forgave her for her sins, she forgave those who had sinned against her. And because of that she has been set free-healed from the most brutal of wounds. I will always remember her face. Although the lines around her eyes hinted at hard times, the quiet beauty and calm I saw were striking. Her face shone with the light of one whose wings were broken but who now soars again.
