A baby delivered on the side of the road is healthy and safe thanks to help from Trooper Aaron Ranker of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

In the world of fun birth stories, is it more fun to be the first baby born in a new year or the baby delivered on the side of the road?

If Mom were getting a vote, she'd probably prefer to be safely checked in and resting in a hospital bed. There she would be slowly easing into contractions, holding the hand of a loved one, and surrounded by doctors and nurses ready to address any medical situation that might occur. Alas, that wasn't how things went down for one Tennessee mom who ended up delivering her little guy roadside!

Fighting traffic can be a real headache, and car accidents make jams and pile-ups much worse. But, babies don't come at convenient times. As Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Aaron Ranker headed back to his post one day, this is the exact emergency to which he responded.

Trooper Ranker heard sirens and called dispatch to see what was going on. He learned that a lady was in labor on the side of Interstate 40 in Dickson County. The unnamed woman had been headed to Memphis but was detained by an earlier car crash. She had called her mother for help in timing her contractions, and, eventually, called 911 for emergency assistance.

Tennessee Police Officer To The Rescue

Formerly an EMT, Trooper Ranker knew what to do as soon as he arrived on the scene. He recognized immediately that there was no time to waste and no time to wait for the ambulance. So, using a blanket and his previous experience, Trooper Ranker helped the stranded mom deliver a healthy baby boy!

The delivery took about five minutes and was complete by the time EMS arrived-in time to transport mom and baby to Horizon ER. While this was not the first time that Trooper Ranker had helped deliver a baby, he shared with WKRN that it was indeed the most memorable!

Understandably, Tennessee Highway Patrol is grateful to have Trooper Ranker on their team, writing, "We are extremely proud of Aaron." Judging by the smile on her face, Mom feels exactly the same!
