91-year-old veteran Donald Morrison almost died 73 years ago while fighting for our country. When he was only 18-years-old he decided to enlist in the army. Donald was eventually stationed in Germany and ordered to fight on the front lines.Donald recalls one specific day where he thought he was going to die.
In 1944 during World War II Donald was fighting in the trenches and a piece of shrapnel hit him hard. First, it brushed across his face and then pounded into the left side of his chest. He was knocked over by the sheer impact of the force. His comrades thought for sure he was a goner and left him.
But, Donald wasn’t dead. Donald had always carried his Bible in the left breast pocket of his uniform and on this particular day, the Bible saved him. When he had enough energy to get up, he took his Bible out of his pocket and saw that the shrapnel was pierced halfway through the book.
The thickness of the pages acted as a barrier and kept the shrapnel from hitting Donald’s heart.Donald knows that this was no coincidence and that God saved his life. When Donald returned to the camp his comrades were in complete shock. He says, they all looked like they had seen a ghost.
They thought for sure Donald was dead. Everyone was beyond grateful to see Donald and amazed at God’s miracle. Donald has never forgotten that moment. He still has that Bible and the piece of shrapnel that could have killed him.
It reminds him of how lucky he is to be living and breathing. 73 years ago his life could have ended, but God had a bigger plan. This is a reminder to all of us that God is always watching over us and protecting us.
