final shift at walmart - Gail Lewis tearful goodbye

During her final shift at Walmart, longtime employee Gail Lewis made an announcement saying goodbye to the staff and customers. And her emotional reaction is truly moving!

Undergoing and experiencing change is usually never an easy process. Even when the change is for the best, it still may not be easy or fun. Routines are comforting and safe because they are familiar, and we know what to expect and when. However, change disrupts and can cause problems, fear and even sadness or anger.

A clip posted on YouTube shows the emotions that can result whenever change, even a good change, occurs.

Employee Says Goodbye During Final Shift At Walmart

The short 1-minute-long clip begins with Gail Lewis, a 10-year Walmart associate, on a walkie-talkie signing off for the last time.

"Attention Walmart, this is Gail Lewis, 10-year associate, Morris, Illinois, 844, signing out, good night," she says into the walkie-talkie.

In a video she recorded following her announcement, Gail became quite emotional about her final shift at Walmart. She explained that her tears were not necessarily tears of sadness. However, she did explain that she would miss her co-workers greatly.

"It's a happy sad because I'm going to be going to a better job," she said through tears. "And those people became like family. I went through a lot with them."

As Gail mentions, when people become sad and distraught about leaving a job, it's not necessarily the work they'll miss. Instead, it's the people. Jobs and workplaces are always replaceable. People can always go somewhere else to get another paycheck. But friendships and the relationships that have been formed with co-workers are not replaceable or transferable.

The clip mentions that Gail's tearful video following her final shift at Walmart has gone viral. It has been viewed more than 20 million times.

Change in life may often be difficult, scary and full of unknowns. But, as is the case with Gail, it can lead to bigger and better things.
