Couple Gets A Second Chance At Their Honeymoon 60 Years Later

Children never fail to amaze me with their ability to share love and compassion in a way we can't seem to understand as adults. And the kids of Bear Tavern Elementary School in New Jersey show the exact kind of love I'm talking about.

To fully understand the act of kindness these Fifth Graders pulled off, we have to go back 60 years. In 1957 Reverend Gilbert Caldwell had just married the love of his life Grace and he couldn't wait to take her on their honeymoon. Gilbert had made a reservation at a resort in the Poconos, a big trip since the two were married in North Carolina. But they packed up and headed on their way.

Sadly when they made it to the resort management tried to tell the couple they didn't have a reservation, but Gilbert had his confirmation in hand. Finally the couple was asked to leave, and it was made very clear that it was because the couple was black.

Heartbroken the couple was forced to stay in an all black hunting lodge near by. A bunch of burley men toting guns wasn't at all how the couple had hoped their honeymoon would go. When they got home Reverend Gilbert joined the Civil Rights Movement and worked side by side with Martin Luther King Jr.

Now Gilbert travels around to schools with his wife Grace and the two talk about the Civil Rights Movement and segregation. The Reverend usually shares their honeymoon story to help kids understand what things were like back then. When the Fifth Graders at Bear Tavern heard the story they couldn't get over it.

In fact just thinking about it still brings some of them to tears. So they wrote letters to the resort trying to help make the wrong right. The resort is a totally new building with new owners. But when those owners read the story in those letters they knew they had to help these kids.

So they decided to honor the kids' request for an all-expense paid honeymoon re-do. And now 60 years later the Caldwells are getting a chance to have the honeymoon they always dreamed of. And it's all because of some incredible kids with big hearts and a passion to make the world a better place. This is incredible!
