A lost crucifix, which went missing during a battle in 1916, finally made its way back to its rightful church in France over a century later. And what an incredible story it is!

The cross of Christ is at the heart of our faith. It's become a beacon of hope when all seems lost. A crucifix lost on the battlefield during WWI is finally back where it belongs after 107 years.

During The Somme War, a church in France was destroyed in 1916. The church lost its precious crucifix in battle. Yet a British reverend recovered it from the carnage and brought it to London to sit at All Saints in Tinwell in 1936.

While the battle completely destroyed the church in its original hometown, the lost crucifix was held in reverence in a different country. And with the church and town now rebuilt, a miracle is about to happen.

Lost Crucifix Returned After 107 Years

Some of the All Saints parishioners are preparing to make a 297-mile trip to place the crucifix where it belongs in a village in northern France. It will be 107 years before the symbol of salvation, and hope will be displayed in their church once again. The crucifix is also seen as a symbol of what was lost and is now restored after the war.

Reverend Olwen Woolcock from Tinwell said, "A village once destroyed is rebuilt; where there was trauma and death in 1917, today there is life and community. The crucifix is like the last piece of the jigsaw in that restoration."

The church has Katharine DcDevitt to thank for the reunification plan. When she learned in 2018 the Doingt church had been rebuilt, she contacted the mayor of Doingt-Flamincourt and asked if they wanted their lost relic back.

Overall the trip to return the lost crucifix has taken about four years to plan, but what a sweet pilgrimage it will be. When you feel life is hopeless, remember the cross. When you find yourself in crisis, remember the cross. And when you are in need of redemption, remember the cross. It's not the cross that is substantial, it's what Jesus did on the cross that makes it so precious. What a beautiful story of restoration!

"They said they would very much like their crucifix back so we started to organize the trip," she said.
