A man comes across a veteran's dog tags from WWII and now he's on a mission to return them!

Adam Gross was searching for submerged metal objects by ‘magnet fishing' in a Grand Rapids River when he found a treasure too rare to keep for himself. He found dog tags belonging to WWII veteran Clifford J. Voight from the year 1943 when Clifford enlisted.

Instead of tossing the old tags, Adam set out on a mission to return the veteran’s dog tags to their rightful owner. This led him to hunt online to find Clifford or family members.

Quest To Return Veteran’s Dog Tags

Sadly, Adam's search revealed Clifford had passed away and was laid to rest in Mesa, Arizona. How had the tags ended up at the bottom of a river in Michigan is anyone's guess.

Undeterred by the distance and death of Clifford, Adam hopes his story will reach Clifford's family.

"I mean, it would be awesome to go in person and hand it over in person, you know? But Arizona and Michigan. We're quite a ways away," Adam said.

Now the next step is waiting on the cemetery to release contact information so Adam can write a letter and get the veteran’s dog tags to Clifford's family. Adam said, "They're not just dog tags. They're someone's history," he said.

Adam loves magnet fishing, he's found quite a few interesting things waiting to be discovered at the bottom of lakes and rivers. He's found several guns, bikes, lawnmowers, and he even found a World War II training grenade. But he says the dog tags are an important part of history that deserves to go to their rightful owner.

Indeed they are. What a respectful way to take action and honor those who have fought for our country. We hope this story reaches Clifford's family so the veteran’s dog tags can find their way home.
